Flying Chairs Theatre Company was founded in 2019 by Ben Aarons. The original members of the company when it was founded were Ben Aarons, Christy Rutland, Jack Bell, Max Stephens-Sforza and Rob Jones. Over time, members left the company due to other career ambitions. Ben Aarons and Christy Rutland are the only two remaining original members of the company.
The company originally operated under a different name before Christy Rutland suggested changing the name to Flying Chair. Christy's inspiration for this name came from rehearsals for the company's production of Mojo by Jez Butterworth, in which Christy would always launch a chair with his foot. During one rehearsal, Christy booted the chair so hard that the chair broke. The other company members all agreed that this was a great name for the company.
There was some ambiguity as to whether the name was 'Flying Chair' or 'Flying Chairs'. In the end, the company decided to become 'Flying Chairs' as it made the company sound more like a collective.
The company currently consists of its company members and a board of directors. The board of directors consists of the Artistic Director: Ben Aarons, the Creative Director: Gabriel Foley, and the Executive Director: Jack Lord.
